The Norwegian Seafood Export Council (NSEC) reports total exports of 53,8 billion NOK (approximately 6,9 billion Euros) and a volume of 2,7 million metric tonnes. This is a tremendous growth of 9.1 billion NOK from 2009, and most of this is due to aquaculture. Salmon prices have seen record heights, together with an increased volume in Norway. Aquaculture now accounts for 62 % of the total Norwegian export of seafood.
Most relevant to Nordic Group is the whitefish sector. For Norway in general, there has also been an increased total value for whitefish in 2010. –But this is due to higher quotas, as prices have gone down. This corresponds very well with our own experience here in Nordic Group. Higher volumes have made end results decent, in spite of slim margins. This trend is likely to be even more evident in 2011. For the first time since the 90s, total cod catches in the North East Atlantic are likely to pass 1 million metric tonnes. This is good news for the cod, and good news for the seafood industry. But it will certainly mean a lot of hard work (and fun!) in the months to come.
